Registration
Process

Getting registered for the first time is a simple process based on an assessment of your teaching qualifications and a suitability assessment.

Every teacher that wants to teach in a grant–aided school in Northern Ireland must be registered with GTCNI.

Assessment is based on the completion of an Application and submitting appropriate documentary evidence along with the Registration fee.

The Application Form you need to complete will depend on where you were awarded your teaching qualification. There is a different application form for:

  • Northern Ireland Graduates
  • Northern Ireland Further Education Graduates (PGDFHE and PGCEFE only)
  • United Kingdom Graduates
  • Applicants qualified outside of the UK (Rest of World)

There is also an application form for teachers who have previously been awarded ‘eligibility to teach’ by the Department of Education (DE Recognised). You will be directed to this application form if you supply a Northern Ireland Teacher Reference number on the application sign up page.

Once you are a registered teacher you will have to renew your registration every year (the registration year runs 1 April to 31 March).
