Who funds Us

The Council is funded by teacher subscriptions. We therefore have a clear line of accountability to teachers for how we spend their money.

Governance and Oversight

The Council is a non Departmental Public Body (NDPB).  Its sponsor Department is the Department of Education.  The Minister for Education is accountable to the Assembly for the activities and performance of the GTCNI.

The GTCNI is governed by a Council of members elected and appointed in accordance with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland ( Constitution) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2001.  Ministerial appointments to the Council are made in line with the Code of Practice issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

Officers of the Council

The Council is supported by a small team of 17 officers led by Sam Gallaher, Chief Executive.
